Mike Ahart: Two Decades of Steadfast Stewardship

  • Mike Ahart has been working for environmental causes since the mid-70s. Currently the president of the Northumberland Association for Progressive Stewardship (NAPS), Mike has been instrumental in creating the “Too-Good-To-Throw-Away” shed at Horsehead and the 2024 updated Paddler’s Guide—which saw 25,000 copies printed to help locals and visitors alike explore our waters. When he isn’t editing the Waterway Guide from his catamaran, he’s providing pro bono design and music production for community causes.

Andy Sitison: From Empathetic AI to Environmental Problem Solving

  • Andy Sitison was simultaneously nominated for Volunteer of the Month by Mike, and it only seemed right to recognize both of these amazing stories of service. After 35 years in emerging technology and AI, Andy decided to add more to his plate! As VP of NAPS, he’s applied his problem-solving rigor to the “Ghost Pot” crisis, with NAPS recovering over 100 abandoned traps this year alone. Andy’s leadership earned NAPS a 2024 award from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS).
