Remembering Nichelle Nichols on the Early Jazz Music Review

This week’s Early Jazz Music Review includes a special segment on Nichelle Nichols who passed away July 30, 2022.  You will remember her as LT. Uhura on the original Star Trek series.

If you’re a real Trek fan, you might remember that she sang in several Star Trek episodes and one of the movies.    Her career started as a dancer with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, then as a singer with the group.  Later she spent some time with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra.  She acted opposite Sammy Davis Jr in the 1959 movie Porgy & Bess.  She recorded jazz standards in the 1970s & 1980s.
